WordPress Hosting for Agencies: Choosing the Right Stack for Client Projects
Most agency-client relationships sour because of one thing: a slow website. And in many cases, the site itself is well-built — but the hosting is wrong for the job. Here is how to choose WordPress hosting that keeps your builds fast, your clients happy and your agency out of late-night emergency calls.
Why Hosting Matters More Than Most Agencies Realise
I have seen beautifully designed, well-coded WordPress sites perform like a £200 budget build — because they are sitting on £5/month shared hosting with 30 other sites on the same server. Hosting is the foundation. If the foundation is weak, everything you build on top suffers.
But cost matters too. Agencies that push every client onto £200/month managed hosting will lose projects to competitors quoting a more reasonable price. The skill is matching the hosting tier to the project — not defaulting to the most expensive option or the cheapest.
Hosting Tiers Explained
Shared Hosting (£3–£15/month)
Your site shares a server with dozens or hundreds of others. Resources are pooled — if one site on the server gets a traffic spike, your site slows down.
Best for:
Low-traffic brochure sites, personal blogs, staging environments.
Not for:
Client work. Just do not do it. The support costs from "my site is slow" tickets will far exceed the hosting savings.
Managed WordPress Hosting (£20–£80/month)
Servers optimised specifically for WordPress. Automatic updates, built-in caching, staging environments, daily backups and WordPress-specific support. This is the sweet spot for most agency client sites.
Best for:
Business brochure sites, small WooCommerce stores, agency portfolios, most client projects.
Premium Managed / VPS (£80–£300+/month)
Dedicated resources, advanced caching (server-level Redis, Varnish), CDN included, priority support, higher PHP memory limits. For sites where performance directly impacts revenue.
Best for:
WooCommerce stores doing real volume, membership sites, high-traffic content sites, multilingual sites with significant traffic.
Recommended Hosts for UK Agency Projects
| Host | Best For | UK Data Centre | Starting Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kinsta | Premium managed, speed-critical sites | Yes (London) | £25/mo |
| WP Engine | Security-focused, enterprise | Yes (London) | £20/mo |
| SiteGround | Best value managed, small-mid sites | Yes (London) | £3/mo (promo) |
| Cloudways | Flexible VPS, agency dashboard | Yes (London) | £10/mo |
| 20i | UK-based, agency-focused reseller | Yes (UK) | £7/mo |
What to Look for Beyond Price
- Staging environment: One-click staging and push-to-production. If the host does not offer staging, you will need a third-party tool — which adds complexity and cost.
- Daily backups with one-click restore: Not "up to 30 days" — actual daily, automated, off-server backups. Test the restore process once before relying on it.
- PHP version control: You should be able to switch PHP versions yourself, not wait for support to do it. WordPress 7+ requires PHP 8.1 minimum.
- Support quality: Test support before committing. Send a technical question and see how fast and accurately they respond. If their support team cannot explain object caching, they will not help you when the site goes down.
- Data centre location: For UK clients, data should be in London or at minimum, an EU data centre. GDPR compliance depends on it.
- Agency-friendly features: Ability to manage multiple client sites from one dashboard, transfer sites between accounts, and white-label the hosting interface if you resell.
The Client Hosting Conversation
Many agencies let clients choose their own hosting. This almost always ends badly. The client picks the cheapest option, the site performs poorly and the agency gets blamed for a "slow build."
The alternative is to include hosting in your project — either by reselling it or by specifying a required host in your proposal. If the client insists on their own hosting, include a written minimum specification in your contract:
- PHP 8.1 or newer
- 256MB+ PHP memory limit
- MySQL 8.0 or MariaDB 10.6+
- SSL certificate (Let's Encrypt minimum)
- Server-level caching (Redis or Memcached)
If the client's chosen host does not meet these specifications, performance issues are not your responsibility. Document this in writing before any code is written.
